Kris B. Siemionow, MD

Dr. Kris B. Siemionow, M.D. is Chief of Spine Surgery and Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Dr. Siemionow completed fellowships in Spine Surgery and he specializes in the surgical management of spinal conditions affecting the neck, spine, and back in adults, children, and adolescents. Dr. Siemionow is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Siemionow completed a residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio and fellowship training in Adult Spine Surgery at Rush University Medical Center and a Pediatric Spine Fellowship at the Shriners Hospital for Children.

Dr. Siemionow is co-founder of Global Spine Outreach. As part of Global Spine Outreach, Dr. Siemionow performs surgery in several European and South American cities. Dr. Siemionow also participates in a spine surgery mission to Uganda, East Africa, where he treats both children and adults suffering from spinal trauma, scoliosis, tumors, and infection.

Dr. Siemionow is very active academically and has authored over 100 peer reviewed articles, abstracts, and book chapters pertaining to spine surgery and basic science spine research. He was awarded an NIH grant to study, “ The effects of inflammation on glial fibrillary acidic protein expression in satellite cells of the dorsal root ganglion.” Some of his current research is focused on spinal deformity, the effects of minimally invasive surgical techniques, and complex cervical spine surgery. Dr. Siemionow’s fellow is Dr. Antoni Swirkowicz, MD from Zielona Gora, Poland.

Dr. Siemionow has been awarded several patents for developing devices and technologies used in nerve and spine surgery. Dr. Siemionow is valued by many innovative companies and is currently a speaker and/or consultant for,Johnson & Johnson, Globus, Amedica, Providence Medical Technologies, Verteks Medical, and Holo Surgical.
